Running Is Elementary is a beloved spring tradition shared with our fellow West Potomac Pyramid schools. The track and field program brings elementary students together to learn drills and skills guided by student-athletes from the West Potomac High School Track Team, culminating in meets at West Potomac High School.
The 2026 season has wrapped up. Registration and details for the 2027 season will be posted here in early spring. Thank you to everyone who ran, cheered, and volunteered!
How the program works
- Practices run on Wednesday afternoons for about a month in April — Grades 1–6 practice for an hour, Kindergarten for a half hour.
- The season ends with two meets at West Potomac High School — one for Grades K–2 and one for Grades 3–6.
- Program cost has been $7 for participants who already have a team shirt, or $30 with a new team shirt (2026 pricing).
Shirt exchange
We use the same classic shirt design every year! To reduce waste and save money, check out the exchange sheet to donate or find a pre-loved shirt: have a shirt to give? Check the “Shirts Needed” list first to see if you can fill a request — if not, add yours to the “Giveaway” list. Need a shirt? Check the “Giveaway” list first — if your size isn’t there, add your request to the “Shirts Needed” list.
Help lead the program
Running Is Elementary is coordinated by SLES parent volunteers, and we’re always looking for new leaders to learn the ropes — no track experience necessary! The role is primarily administrative and is a wonderful, fun niche for community involvement.
